A youth group sympathetic to the cause of the governing NPP, Patriotic Intellectuals, has said that former President John Dramani Mahama is playing drama with the Free SHS programme. The group has consequently urged Ghanaians not to take what the former President says on the policy serious.
The group maintains that Mr Mahama’s promise to make the policy better is a political gimmick meant to throw dust into the eyes of unsuspecting Ghanaians to win their votes in the upcoming general elections.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Michael Appiah Sasa, chairman of the group, said the NDC flagbearer has demonstrated that he is indecisive, and must not be trusted in anything he promises.
Inconsistency
The group added that the many inconsistent comments and attacks on Free SHS by functionaries of the NDC, since 2012, is an evidence of their tongue-turning traits.
The group said Mr Mahama once described the Free SHS programme as “bogus, 419 and a Lalasulala” policy which would collapse Ghana’s secondary education system.
He added that the former President is also on record to have promised to reverse the policy and that the money for its implementation should rather go into investing in other sectors.
According to the group, they cannot fathom what has changed that Mr Mahama and his opposition NDC “are performing theatrics” on the policy after demonising same for several months.
“What has changed? Has he now realized that President Akufo-Addo is a visionary leader? Is Free SHS no longer a whimsical promise by a desperate politician to win power?” he questioned.
He added that analysis of the 2020 WASSCE results has vindicated Free SHS as a laudable policy. He therefore urged Ghanaians to show appreciation for this and other achievements by NPP in just four years by voting massively for President Akufo-Addo and all NPP parliamentary candidates on December 7 .
