The overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari II, has expressed appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for the immense role he has played in ensuring peace in Dagbon.
Speaking during a courtesy call on him by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia at the Gbewaa Palace yesterday, Ya Na Abukari II also praised the President for his commitment to the development of the area.
“Today is a special day in the life of the people of the North, a moment of pride which reflects the development through which Yendi and, for that matter Dagbon, has gone through the last three years.
“His Royal Majesty, Ndan Ya Na Abukari II, wishes to express his gratitude for the enviable contribution of Dagbon Malti Naa I, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, and the people for ensuring the peace we enjoy today in Dagbon,” he said.
“Dagbon is particularly grateful to H E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for gracing last year’s Damba Festival and, most importantly, his accompanied august guest, H E Mia Amar Motley, QC, MP, the Prime Minister of Barbados, and her high level dignitaries and ambassadors, which automatically catapulted our previously local Damba celebration onto the international scene.”
More projects
Dr Bawumia assured Dagbon and the entire northern regions of President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to ensuring more development in the area.
Apart from the countrywide social intervention programmes of the government such as Free SHS, One Constituency One Ambulance, Planting For Food and Jobs, One District One Factory, among others, Dr Bawumia cited a number of development projects the government has undertaken in the north, including Dagbon, as a demonstration of the President’s sincerity towards the progress of the north.
He announced that the government is in discussion with the University for Development Studies (UDS) to set up a satellite campus in Yendi.
He also announced the government’s decision to convert the Pong Tamale Veterinary College into a university for agriculture.
People-centred policies
In a related development, the overlord of Mion Traditional Area, Alhaji Abdulai Mahamadu III, has described the policies and programmes of the Akufo-Addo government as “people-centred”, achieving “positive, far-reaching impacts” across the nation.
“Though I am a chief and without political inclination, permit me to say that the NPP government’s policies and programmes are truly people-centred,” the Mion Lana said yesterday when Vice-President Bawumia paid a courtesy call on him.
He said one cannot mention flagship programmes like the Free SHS policy, Planting for Food and Jobs, NABCO, among others, without placing emphasis on their positive far-reaching impacts on livelihoods and the general economic wellbeing of the people.
“For we here in Dagbon, the peace we are enjoying today is enough for everyone to recognize that you are the people’s government. Thank you for helping us sail through the conflict,” he added.
He also praised the Akufo-Addo government for its “timely and appropriate interventions” in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding: “We have watched with admiration and appreciation for the excellent approach and handling of the pandemic.”
Inspiration
He also described Dr Bawumia as “an inspiration to families of the Savanna.”
“You have not only won the trust and confidence of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, but the entire nation.
“Your sterling qualities have reshaped the economy to its present stable state. Your role in every programme of the country is admirable and worthy of praise. You are indeed a beacon of hope for the North, a true statesman, and a politician who has successfully brought new dynamics of issue-based politics in the country. Well done,” he said.
