The arrested Nigerian immigrants
Seventeen suspected Nigerian immigrants have been arrested for unlawfully using the Ghana-Togo boarder to enter the country. They were arrested by a joint Police and Immigration team known as “Operation Mother.”
The suspected immigrants, 12 males and five females, were arrested on Wednesday, near the Kpong Dam at Akuse in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region. They were onboard a VW crafter bus with registration number GR 5314-21.
According to the police, the vehicle was coming from the Volta Region when it was stopped at a police check point in the Eastern Region.
The suspects confirmed their identities as Nigerians upon interrogations by the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Immigration Command and the Akuse District Police Command.
The suspects, during further interrogations, disclosed that they were travelling from Aflao to Madina in the Greater Accra Region. There was only one Ghanaian in their midst.
Handing over
The driver of the vehicle, whose name was only given as Mawuli, confessed to the security officials, indicating that he and his mate loaded all the 17 suspected Nigerians in the early hours of Wednesday in Aflao.
The Akuse District Police Commander, Superintendent Winfred Asare Nyarko, confirmed the news to the Daily Statesman, and indicated that all the suspects had been handed over to officials of the Ghana Immigration Service at their headquarters in Accra for further interrogations and actions.
