The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa, says the introduction of quality leadership as an ingredient in winning the 2024 presidential election, as enunciated in the analysis by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), is a huge boost to the NPP’s effort at ‘Breaking the 8’.
This, he noted, implies a better governance record for the party’s candidate based on the cumulative achievements of the NPP in the Fourth Republic.
Mr Buaben Asamoa referred to the EIU report, which noted the poor record of leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), especially under former President Mahama as against that of the NPP.
On that score, he stated that whilst the NPP is on record “for building”, the NDC has made history “for demolishing”.
Election 2024
The EIU in its report said the NDC will win the 2024 elections on the condition that it fields another candidate, apart from former President John Dramani Mahama. The London-based EIU cited public dissatisfaction with economic challenges, the slow pace in development and the tackling of corruption as reasons for a probable change in 2024.
However, Mr Buaben Asamoa indicated that despite that observation, the cumulative record of the NPP in the Fourth Republic puts the NPP ahead of the NDC, making the incumbent administration a better alternative for the average voter in 2024.
“But more importantly, NDC has not demonstrated any policy capacity capable of turning out better and faster outcomes in the areas listed. Indeed, the tendency is for the NDC to set the country back in respect of these factors whenever the eight-year cycle kicks in. The NPP builds and the NDC destroys,” he stressed in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“Political stability is also a product of the NPP’s quiet, yet hard work on the security front. Notwithstanding increased threats of regional instability spilling over into Ghana, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and, sometimes, very extremist talk from anarchic elements, the EIU predicts, without hesitation, that there will be political stability over the next five years,” he added in the statement.
That also, he held, is a plus for free, fair and violence free elections.
“Finally, the economy. No country is immune to the twin scourges of COVID-19 and the Russia/Ukraine conflict. The NDC’s solution to the economic difficulties driven by these factors is to seek solace in the IMF. Abandon their leadership to the excuse of the IMF and feed off the crumbs of the harsh austerity measures that would roll back all the socially-sensitive policies the NPP is sustaining to cushion the Ghanaian,” he noted.
In in the opinion of the NPP National Communications Director, this shows more competence on the part of the NPP than the NDC’s record of administration.
Additionally, Mr Buaben Asamoa said that it would not be news if the NDC won the 2024 election since that had been the tradition for power to exchange hands between two leaders after every eight years.
“If NDC wins, it will not be news. But if the NPP wins, it would be a remarkable achievement that would demonstrate the coming of age of electoral politics in Ghana. In other words, an NPP victory in 2024, popularly dubbed ‘Breaking the 8’would be a more unusual event than an NDC victory based on the history of mere elections [without the issues] in the 4th Republic,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the EIU does not tell us how the NDC will come by its slim majority in Parliament. But given that Mahama is already the putative candidate, the EIU can comfortably say “we told you so” when the NPP breaks the eight with quality leadership and a strong policy performance that continues to deliver employment, increased infrastructure, and a higher profile against corruption,” he added.
