The export of mangoes reached a record-high of $64.4 million in 2021, compared to $50.3 million recorded in 2020, according to data from the Ghana Export Promotion Authority’s potential market report.
The country now controls 1.7 percent of the global export market for mangoes, with its 32 market destinations.
GEPA said exports grew by 28 percent between 2020 and 2021, thereby ranking Ghana the 11th in the order of countries that exported mangoes to the world in 2021.
The major four importing countries, comprising UK, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, accounted for about 91.4 percent of the total value of export of mangoes from Ghana.
“Whilst UK imports of mangoes from the world grew by five percent between 2017-2021, Ghana’s exports to the UK grew by six percent during the same period. Between 2017-2021, exports from Ghana grew by 27 percent to Germany and nine percent to Switzerland,” the report said.
“In 2021 UK global importation of Mangoes amounted to about $230million with Ghana emerging as the largest supplier to the UK market. Brazil ($40.02million) and Pakistan ($35.3million) were the 2nd and 3rd largest suppliers respectively,” it added.
The report further indicated that between 2020-2021, “Maldives, Czech Republic, and Turkey showed the highest growth rates under import of Mangoesfrom Ghana by 2517 percent, 2500 percent, and 1437 percent respectively.”
Potential new markets
According to the report, global demand for mangoes has seen a steady growth from $2.91billion in 2017 to $4.14billion in 2021.
New and potential markets with significant average growth rates, favorable tariff regimes, and geographical advantages to be explored for market diversification and penetration for Ghana’s export of mangoes are Russia, Spain, and Hong Kong.
“Although average tariff applied by China and proximity to market are unfavorable elements to Ghanaian mango exporters, the Chinese market is still worth considering, given the increase in the total value of imported mangoes from the world from $166.75 million in 2017 to $774.78 million in 2021,” GEPA said.
Yams
Meanwhile, in its Competitor Report earlier this month, GEPA indicated that Ghana is the world’s largest exporter of yam.
It indicated that the country raked in US$48 million in 2021 adding that it now controls 24 percent of the $200 million global export market, growing its export value from $38.5 million in 2018 to US$48.2 million in 2021.
GEPA said exports grew at an annual rate of 14 percent from 2020-2021 and an average of nine percent between 2017 and 2021.
“The USA alone imported $87 million worth of yam from the world in 2021. Among its top suppliers were: Jamaica, 37.4 percent; Ghana, 21.9 percent; Costa Rica, 10.8 percent; Colombia, 8.7 percent; and Brazil, 8.2 percent,” GEPA said.
“The United States of America’s imports of yam from Ghana represent 39.6 percent of the total global value of yam exported by Ghana,” GEPA added.
Meanwhile, globally, Jamaica is Ghana’s closest competitor, ranking second in the export of yam. Its total exports were valued at US$39 million in 2021.
Jamaica had 82.8 percent of its yam exports go to the United States market, as compared to the 39.6 percent of Ghana’s exports to the same market.
The leading global exporters of yam were Ghana, US$48 million; Jamaica, US$39 million; the United States of America, US$22 million; Japan, US$21 million; and China, US$20 million.
