The government, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has launched a free annual health check-up initiative. This programme is designed to ensure that all Ghanaians receive at least one comprehensive medical examination each year at any health facility on their birthday.
Speaking during the launch yesterday at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, said the initiative was part of his vision to not only address existing health concerns but also to proactively identify potential risks, ultimately fostering a healthier population nationwide.
He emphasised that the programme was a cornerstone of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government’s broader strategy to enhance preventive healthcare, and address rising concerns about non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular conditions.
Accessible/ proactive healthcare
He stressed that the goal was to make healthcare more accessible and proactive. He believes that by offering free annual check-ups, the Authority is taking a crucial step towards detecting health issues early and reducing the burden of disease on Ghana’s healthcare system.
He explained that under this initiative, all Ghanaian citizens who are registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will be eligible to receive a free annual medical check-up at participating healthcare facilities. He added that Ghanaians who are not yet NHIS-registered will also be enrolled when they visit the hospital for their check-up.
The NHIA CEO explained that the check-up would include a thorough physical examination, blood tests and screenings for major health conditions. According to him, central to his vision is the belief that preventive healthcare is not just a luxury for a privileged few, but a fundamental right for all citizens.
“By shifting the focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, Ghana can significantly reduce the burden of disease, improve overall well-being, and enhance productivity across all sectors of society,” he said.
Early detection of ailment
Dr. Aboagye said the free annual medical check-up would serve as a proactive intervention, allowing healthcare providers to detect health issues at an early stage when they are most treatable.
Additionally, he said, the initiative will offer opportunities for health education and lifestyle counseling, empowering individuals to make informed choices that promote long-term health and vitality.
“Thanks to the support and dedication of all our partners, the NHIA will collaborate with each partner to ensure they are well-equipped to deliver high-quality screening and counseling. This programme is not just about testing; it’s about educating our population on healthy lifestyles and preventive measures,” he stressed.
He, therefore, urged all citizens to take advantage of this free service during the month of August. “Preventive healthcare is a crucial step towards a healthier life. By participating in this screening programme, you are not only safeguarding your health but also contributing to a nation that is working to expand health services, improve health infrastructure, and ensure that every citizen has access to the care they need,” he indicated.
Potential benefits
In terms of benefits, he indicated that the NHIA intended to increase life expectancy through this initiative, and reduce the costs associated with curative healthcare.
“Currently, the high costs related to diabetes are unsustainable, and this initiative will help reduce these costs. This is just the beginning. Future interventions will include other tests, such as the Pap smear for women, among others. We aim to accelerate the achievement of universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on health and wellness. We also plan to use this initiative to increase our membership,” he revealed.
He emphasised: “The launch of this programme is just the start. We will roll it out nationwide through the Ghana Health Service and all our stakeholders, including partners and other development organisations. Our goal is to ensure that the Ghanaian people understand and take full advantage of this programme. Research is a key component of this initiative, as is health education and community engagement through traditional leaders”.
