President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence in the long-term impact of his government’s policies. He believes that the true assessment of his administration’s performance would be made by posterity.
Addressing dignitaries, clergy, and congregants during the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s bicentennial anniversary at the Osu Castle on Sunday, December 22, 2024, the outgoing President noted that his tenure had focused on laying the foundation for sustainable national development, rather than seeking immediate gratification.
He emphasised the importance of historical judgment in governance, stating, “I’m confident in all humility, prosperity will judge well the Akufo-Addo government’s performance. Future generations will look back on this era and say that we laid a strong foundation for progress and prosperity.”
Interventions
He further touted numerous social interventions in health, education, and energy sectors that had significantly enhanced the quality of life for citizens. “I speak to you proud of the achievements my government has chalked under God’s guidance and the support of our people. From transformative policies in education, health, industry, infrastructure and agriculture, to the promotion of good governance and economic development,” the President stressed.
He lauded the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for its significant contributions to the nation’s development over the past 200 years through the dissemination of the gospel. President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the church’s vital role in supporting his administration.
“The impact of the gospel is not only seen in schools and hospitals but in the moral fibre of our people. As President, I have often drawn strength and wisdom from the word of God…Throughout my tenure of office, the Presbyterian Church has been a steadfast partner praying for me, encouraging me and supporting my government’s vision of national transformation, for this I’m deeply grateful.
“Your prayers have sustained me and your faith has inspired me to persevere even in the most challenging times.” President Akufo-Addo, however, remains optimistic that the seeds sown by his government will yield positive results in the coming years. “Leadership is not about seeking praise in the present; it is about taking decisions that will benefit future generations, even if they are unpopular today,” he stated.
Faith, governance
President Akufo-Addo reflected on the church’s resilience and commitment to service, likening its two-century journey to a mighty tree that provides shelter to millions under its branches. “The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has been a constant in our nation’s history, bearing witness to the power of the Gospel, weathering trials and tribulations, and inspiring generations through faith and hard work,” he said.
He acknowledged the church’s foundational role in Ghana’s struggles for independence and its continued dedication to addressing economic and social challenges. Drawing a parallel with the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness, the President noted, “Like the children of Israel, we have often stumbled and faced adversity, but the faith and perseverance exemplified by the Presbyterian Church remind us of God’s promises and faithfulness.”
Commendation
Highlighting the church’s influence, the President praised its pioneering efforts in education, healthcare, and social justice. Institutions such as the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) and numerous hospitals and community programs stand as testaments to the church’s impact on Ghana’s development.
“The Presbyterian Church has not only preached the message of Christ as our solid rock but has also raised generations of responsible citizens through discipline and service. Its contributions to education and healthcare are unparalleled and continue to shape the moral and intellectual fabric of our nation,” the President said.
He urged the church to remain steadfast in its principles of hard work, integrity, and stewardship, which he described as key pillars for national progress.
Reflection
President Akufo-Addo shared personal insights into his journey as a leader, attributing his resilience and achievements to God’s unmerited grace and the prayers of faith-based communities like the Presbyterian Church. “Moments of uncertainty have been met with God’s faithfulness, and the unwavering support of institutions like this church has inspired me to persevere even in the most challenging times,” he revealed.
The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to advancing national development, referencing ongoing policies in education, health, and infrastructure as efforts anchored in the guidance of faith. “We are laying a strong foundation for progress and prosperity. I am confident that future generations will judge this era favorably,” he added.
The President called on Ghanaians to confront present challenges, including corruption, inequality, and environmental degradation, with renewed determination. Citing the Gospel of Matthew 5:14-16, he urged citizens to let their light shine and continue being agents of hope, unity, and justice.
Addressing the youth in particular, he encouraged them to embrace leadership roles, deepen their faith, and serve their communities with integrity and passion. He also referenced Galatians 6:9 to remind them of the importance of perseverance and collective commitment to building a better Ghana.
