Madam Bossa Ida Mireille Mahoutin, Vice President of the Benin Flying Disc Association, has paid a courtesy call on the management of the Ghana Flying Disc Federation (GFDF) in Accra to bolster the development of disc sports in West Africa.
During the discussion, Madam Bossa emphasised the transformative potential of disc sports for the youth. “Disc sports are more than just a game—they foster physical fitness, mental resilience, and social cohesion,” she stated. She highlighted that the sport not only builds physical strength but also contributes significantly to mental and psychological well-being.
She also pointed out that many aspects of disc sports promoted gender equality, offering young girls and women in Benin unique opportunities to engage in competitive and recreational activities.
“Our vision is to make disc sports a vehicle for empowerment. We want young girls to have a platform where they can shine and develop skills that go beyond the playing field,” Madam Bossa added.
GFDF’s commitment
The president of GFDF, Mr. Desmond Kwame Mantey, expressed his admiration for the proactive steps taken by the Benin Flying Disc Association to popularize the sport in their country.
“It is heartening to see such dedication to youth development and gender inclusiveness,” Mr. Mantey remarked. He elaborated on the broader benefits of disc sports, noting that the globalization of sports had a significant socioeconomic impact.
“When countries work together to develop sports, the benefits go far beyond the playing field. Hosting international events, securing sponsorship deals, and building our national brands all contribute to financial and social growth,” he indicated.
Mr. Mantey also stressed the importance of focusing on girls’ sports as a key agenda item for both federations. “To maximize the impact of disc sports, we must ensure that girls have ample opportunities to participate at every level,” he said.
He added: “Our collaborative efforts today set the stage for a future where disc sports are a household name in our region. By working together, we not only promote healthy living but also build the foundation for a vibrant sports culture that can drive socioeconomic progress.”
