Hon. Paul A. Twum Barimah, former Member of Parliament for Dormaa East
Hon. Paul A. Twum Barimah, a former Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, has expressed strong criticism of what he describes as intimidation tactics against members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana’s justice system.
In a Facebook post on Friday, September 12, 2025, Mr. Twum Barimah questioned the repeated denial of bail to the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, over what he described as a minor offense.
“These creeping trend of intimidation tactics where political opponents are remanded into Police custody must be re-looked at by our courts; it makes mockery of our justice delivery system,” he wrote.
The former lawmaker referenced the Supreme Court case of Martin Kpebu v Attorney-General, noting that “all offenses (including high crimes, first degree and second degree felonies, misdemeanors, etc.) under Ghana’s laws are all bailable.”
He questioned why bail was denied to Mr. Baffoe for the second time, describing it as “a lesser offense under our criminal jurisprudence.”
Hon. Twum Barimah warned that such actions could heighten tensions across the country. “These acts breeds unnecessary tension in the country, and must be a cause for worry to all lovers of democracy,” he wrote.
He further stressed: “We can’t be using a bulldozer to kill a housefly, at a time when Bawku, Bole and other towns and villages are engulfed in serious conflicts involving human lives.”
