The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has described the Mahama Cares initiative as a cornerstone in Ghana’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
Speaking during a Private Health Insurance Schemes (PHIS) stakeholder engagement in Accra, held under the theme: Strengthening partnerships for a sustainable private health insurance industry”, he stressed that the policy would provide the financial and institutional backbone for accessible and sustainable healthcare delivery.
Dr. Bampoe mentioned the dual priorities of the Authority – the rollout of Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) and the operationalisation of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares – as key pillars in improving access to healthcare and aligning national health policies with the broader UHC agenda.
“Permit me to highlight some key priorities the Authority intends to focus on in the coming days and months to improve the general outlook of the health insurance landscape. As you are all aware, Ghana has begun preparation towards rollout of the Free Primary Health Care and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) initiatives to boost Ghana’s advancement towards attaining Universal Health Coverage by 2030,” he stated.
According to him, the Mahama Cares Fund will serve as a reliable and sustainable financing mechanism that guarantees resources for essential healthcare delivery, while the Free Primary Health Care initiative will remove financial barriers at the entry point of healthcare, ensuring that citizens are not denied services due to inability to pay.
