A new nationwide poll by Apex Intelligence and Innovation Insights, a registered non-profit research organisation, has revealed that a plurality of New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates rate the performance of the party’s current national administration as merely “average.” The survey also shows that incumbent General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong (JFK) holds a commanding lead and is the overwhelming favourite in the race for the party’s next General Secretary position.
The survey
The survey fieldwork was conducted between March 11 and March 22, 2026, using a stratified random sample of 871 NPP delegates across all 16 regions and party structures, from constituency executives to national officers. The poll was conducted at a 95 per cent confidence level with a margin of error of ±4.0 per cent, and suggests that while the current national leadership retains some support, a significant portion of delegates remain unconvinced by its overall performance.
According to the poll, 43.8 per cent of delegates rated the performance of the current national executives as “average,” making it the single largest response category. A further 24.7 per cent described the administration’s performance as “good,” while 27.7 per cent collectively rated it “poor” or “very poor.”
The findings indicate a party base that is cautious rather than enthusiastic in its assessment of the current leadership, pointing to what analysts describe as a mixed verdict on the administration’s handling of party affairs. In practical terms, the data suggests that although the current executives continue to enjoy a level of acceptance among the grassroots, many delegates are still looking for stronger organisational leadership and more effective party management heading into the next internal electoral cycle.
Significant lead
Against that backdrop, the poll shows Justin Kodua Frimpong emerging as the overwhelming favourite in the race for General Secretary.
According to the survey, JFK leads the field with 48.3 per cent support, putting him far ahead of his closest competitors and positioning him as the clear front-runner at this stage of the contest.
His nearest challenger, Mr. Eugene Boakye Antwi, garnered 12.1 per cent, while Mr. Kwabena Kokofu followed with 11.1 per cent. Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful placed fourth with 9.9 per cent, with the remaining aspirants trailing significantly behind.
The wide margin between JFK and the rest of the field suggests that, at least for now, the incumbent has established substantial dominance in delegate preference and may enter any future contest with considerable momentum.
Delegates’ expectation
Beyond the horse-race numbers, the poll also sheds light on the qualities delegates say they value most in whoever occupies the General Secretary position.
The survey found that delegates ranked strategic planning as the most important leadership attribute, cited by 24.1 per cent of respondents. This was followed by effective communication at 22.2 per cent, loyalty and sacrifice at 21.1 per cent, and administrative excellence at 20.7 per cent.
Notably, technocratic skills ranked lowest at 11.9 per cent, suggesting that delegates are prioritising practical organisational leadership and political management over technical or bureaucratic competence.
According to the survey analysis, these preferences indicate that NPP delegates are looking for a General Secretary who can not only communicate effectively and remain loyal to the party’s cause, but also demonstrate strategic foresight and administrative strength.
Why JFK ‘leading’ ?
The report further notes that Mr. Kodua Frimpong appears to be benefiting from a strong alignment between delegate expectations and his perceived leadership profile.
According to Apex Intelligence and Innovation Insights, Mr. Kodua Frimpong is viewed by delegates as performing strongly across several of the attributes they say matter most, particularly in areas such as communication, strategic coordination, loyalty, and party organisation.
This overlap between delegate expectations and perceptions of his performance may explain the scale of his current lead in the race. “At this stage, he is not only ahead in general support, but also appears to benefit from being associated with the kind of leadership profile many delegates say they want,” the survey analysis observed.
Implications for NPP
The findings paint a picture of a party membership that is not in open revolt against the current administration but is also not overwhelmingly impressed by it.
With the largest bloc of delegates rating the national executives as “average,” the poll suggests there remains room for both criticism and improvement within the party’s internal leadership structure.
However, Mr. Kodua Frimpong’s dominant showing in the General Secretary race indicates that delegates may distinguish between their broader assessment of the administration and their evaluation of individual officeholders, particularly where the General Secretary is concerned.
Nuanced snapshot
Overall, the poll presents a nuanced snapshot of sentiment within the NPP: delegates appear measured in their appraisal of the current national leadership, but strongly decisive in their early preference for who should serve as the party’s next General Secretary.
With 48.3 per cent support, nearly four times that of his nearest rival, Mr Kodua Frimpong currently stands as the clear candidate to beat, though political observers note that internal party contests remain fluid and could shift depending on alliances, campaigning, and delegate mobilisation in the months ahead.
