The Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has disclosed that the Akufo-Addo government, since assuming office, has made financial and recruitment commitments to 93,742 graduate teachers in the country.
He announced that from Monday November 2, 2020, recruitment portals would be opened again for another batch while that of diploma teachers will be closed on Sunday, November 1, 2020.
“In the last four years, I’m assuming it ends on January 6, 2021, financial clearances given and recruitments done by the Akufo-Addo government will amount 93,724,” he said.
“Whereas under President John Dramani Mahama we had Unemployed Graduate Teachers Association, under His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 24,472 teachers have already been employed and from Monday the recruitment portals will be opened for another 6,500 graduate teacher,” the Education Minister added.
The Education Minster made this known in his presentation at the 6th Nation Building Updates at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra.
In addition, he disclosed that the government is taking steps to recruit over 20,000 graduate and diploma teachers this year.
He said over 14,000 of the diploma teachers would be recruited, adding that over 3,200 of them have already been recruited.
Quality education
Speaking on the theme “The Teacher at the Centre of Quality Education,” the Education Minister said that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has fulfilled its manifesto promises to teachers.
He said the government has, among other things, ensured the restoration of teacher trainee allowance; ensured prompt payment of teachers’ salary, upgrading the status and skills of teachers, among others.
He further said that the government has shown great respect to Ghanaian teachers over the last three years, in keeping faith with its 2016 manifesto.
This, he said, is evident in the fact that Ghana has ranked second under the Global Teacher ranking, with China ranking number one.
He noted that there are no teachers’ strikes in recent times because of the great things the Akufo-Addo government is doing for teachers in the country.
Since Government formed the Ghana Teacher Prize, some of the country’s teachers have been among the top 50 global teachers, he said, adding that “last year, a Ghanaian won the African Teacher Prize under His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
