President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been commended for his immense contribution in bringing peace to Mali recently.
The President of the Transitional Government of Mali, Mr Bah N’daw, gave this commendation yesterday at the Jubilee House during a lunch held in his honour.
The Malian leader is in Ghana as part of his tour of ECOWAS countries since he was appointed the President of the Transitional Government in Mali.
He mentioned that, as Chairman of ECOWAS, President Akufo-Addo led his other colleagues in ensuring the return of the his country to democratic rule.
He said knowing that Dr Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaian, they were not surprised that President Akufo-Addo showed firm leadership in bring peace to Mali.
“The success story President Akufo-Addo had achieved in Mali would enable me lead all the different parties in Mali,” he asserted.
Ghana, Mali relations
He recalled the relations that have existed between Ghana-Guinea-Mali over the years, and also recalled the pan-Africanism culture that everybody admires.
For his part, President Akufo-Addo told the Malian leader that his appointment spoke volumes of the trust and confidence the people have in him.
“Indeed, as Chair of the Authority of Heads of States and Governments, I recall my working visit to Mali last month in October, where I held consultations with you and other government officials to assess the progress made in the transition process and to reaffirm ECOWAS’ solidarity with the people in the Republic of Mali,” Akufo-Addo remarked.
Transition
He commended the Malian leader and his government for the ongoing efforts to calm tensions and resolve the current crisis in Mali, including the establishment of all the institutions of the transition.
He urged him to continue to attach great importance to finalizing the calendar of the electoral process in order to arrive at the presidential and parliamentary elections within the set time frame.
He also entreated him and his government to pay particular attention to the implementation of the 2015 Algiers Accord.
He said the strategic alliance of Ghana-Guinea-Mali, undoubtedly, led to the establishment of the African Union’s predecessor body, the Organisation of African Unity.
“I’m hopeful that we can work together not only to help bring progress and prosperity to the Malian people, but also to work towards the strengthening of the ECOWAS community,” he said.
