As expected, there were widespread jubilations across the country yesterday, especially by members of the New Patriotic Party, following the declaration of the results of the December 7 presidential polls, which saw the incumbent President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, clinching a first round victory against his main contender, former John Dramani Mahama, of the NDC.
With most media houses having their projections on the elections going in favour of President Akufo-Addo, supporters of the NPP had taken over the streets in anticipation of the EC’s declaration.
From the Eastern regional capital, Koforidua, our reporter, Mudasiru Abdul Yakeen, reported that nerves were high as supporters of the two main political parties, NPP and NDC, waited for the declaration of results from the EC.
However, right after the announcement of the results, supporters of the NPP thronged the principal streets of Koforidua to jubilate.
Donning the colours of the NPP, with car horns beeping and the echoing noise of vuvuzelas, the NPP supporters could not hide their joy.
Some attributed the victory to God’s intervention and the good policies and programmes of the President such as the Free SHS, NABCO, Planting for Foods and Jobs, among others.
People in the Ashanti Region, especially Kumasi and other district capitals, could not hold their joy after the EC declared President Akufo-Addo as the President-elect.
Ashanti region
The Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party office at Krofrom was flooded with people jubilating over the NPP’s victory.
Principal streets like Bantama, Oforikrom, Suame, Ejisu, Adum, Kwadaso, Nhyieaso, Atwoma Kwanwoma, to mention a few, saw huge numbers of persons celebrating the NPP’s victory.
Some persons who spoke to the Daily Statesman said the future of their children was secured because the Free SHS policy was not going to be abolished after all.
They said other policies like the Planting for Food and Jobs, One Constituency, One Ambulance, among others, will ensure that Ghana progresses with another four years under NPP.
“I’m not only celebrating because Free Senior High School has come to stay, but also because our water and land resources are protected under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration,” a lady from Bantama said.
Sunyani
From Sunyani, Richard Boahen reported that soon after the declaration of the presidential results by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, jubilant supporters of the NPP and other residents poured out in their numbers on the various streets of Sunyani to celebrate the party’s victory.
According to him, the entire city of Sunyani virtually came a standstill as vehicular and human traffic began to build up on the various streets of the regional capital.
This made it virtually impossible for free flow of traffic, especially within the Central Business District, stretching from Cocoa House to the various suburbs of the town.
People were seen drumming and dancing at various parts of the city, especially at places like Rex, New Town, Estate, Abesim, Fiapre and Penkwase, among several other places.
Operators of drinking spots were also not left out as their patronage soared because a good number of the jubilant supporters patronized their services.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413, representing 51.595 per cent of the valid votes, while his major contender, John Mahama, of the NDC, garnered 6, 214, 889, representing 47.366 per cent.
Reaction from social media
Social media also went gay, with many people congratulating the President.
“Congratulations a million times to you H.E @NAkufoAddo. Indeed The Battle was and still the Lord’s. #Nana Toaso”
Another person, named Ga Mantse, posted, “The people have spoken. Reign once more kings. Congratulations.”
