The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will soon commence the construction of a multifunctional car park at the central business district of the city.
Osei Assibey Antwi, the KMA Chief Executive, on Friday December 18, handed over the site for construction to KFM Limited/TACOA Contribution Limited.
According to him, the project, after completion, will ease the Central Business District (CBD) of vehicular traffic congestion that usually hinders smooth business operations.
He believes that the car park, which will be named after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will help reduce on-street parking, thereby improving free traffic flow in the city.
The project is scheduled to be completed within three years and would cost a little over $ 3 million. Again, the car park will cover approximately an acre of land, close to the Ghana Prisons Service bungalows at Adum.
On-street parking
Mr Assibey Antwi noted: “Sometime ago, we thought it wise to introduce on-street parking at the CCB to create a little space along the road for traders to park their vehicles but it has now brought some inconveniences to us all.
“So the Assembly welcomed several proposals and picked the outstanding one amongst them all and within a 36-month period we will have a nice edifice to address traffic issues”.
“Again, shop operators can therefore park here – allowing customers to shop with ease. And this will go a long way to boom our businesses, so I urge everyone to corporate with the contactor to facilitate smooth execution of the project for it to be completed as scheduled,” he said.
The Executive Partner of KFM Limited/TACOA Contribution Limited, Opoku Kwarteng James, explained that the multipurpose facility will have about 110 shops, 800 parking spaces, banking halls, a day care centre, movie theatre, casino, guest house, place of convenience and a loading bay for commercial vehicles.
He added that some facilities in the car park will help the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to generate funds even when the day’s activities are over.
According to the contactor, the modernised car park will also aid traffic at the central business district to move eight times faster than it used move.
Mr Opoku Kwarteng assured the KMA that his company would do its job accordingly to help them (KMA) address the vehicular traffic challenges at the central business district.
