One person has been pronounced dead following a misunderstanding that ensued between some illegal mining operators.
A group of galamseyers were involved in a bloody clash at Akyem Apinamang, in the Denkyembuor District of the Eastern Region, leading to one of them losing his life.
Gyekye Matthew, 33, was confirmed dead after he was rushed to the St Dominic’s Hospital in Akwatia for treatment.
Attack
According to reports, the clash ensued at Akyem Aworoso, near Akyem Apinamang, when three illegal miners, Kwadwo Owusu, 44, Kwadwo Awuah, 41, and one other identified as ‘Cash’, attacked the deceased and one Desmond Anokye Frimpong, 27. The attack, according to the report, was based on suspicion that the deceased and Frimpong had encroached into their concession.
The deceased and Frimpong, in the heat of the confrontation, took to their heels but their assailants started pelting them with stones, with one of them hitting the head of Gyekye Matthew, sending him to the ground unconscious and leading to his death.
Frimpong, who was able to escape from the scene, reported the incident to the police.
Arrest
The police, following the report, arrested Kwadwo Owusu, who has been charged with murder, and is currently on remand.
Kwadwo Awuah, who was on the run, later reported himself to the Police in the company of his lawyer and is currently in police custody, waiting to be arraigned before court.
The third suspect, identified as ‘Cash’, is currently still on the run.
The Police have, however, given the assurance that all measures will be put in place to apprehend him.
