The Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly has commissioned police and fire service stations at Akotosu and Kumawu respectively to help fight crime in the area.
Speaking at a short ceremony to formally commission the projects, the Sekyere Afram Plains District Chief Executive, Joseph Owusu, who spoke on behalf of the Acting Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, was hopeful that the police would perform their duty diligently to maintain the peace in Akotosu and its surrounding communities.
He noted that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government has made the security and safety of the people its priority, and was optimistic that the police station would serve that particular purpose.
Mr Joseph Owusu again stated that the police station and its officers are there to provide security for all and not to haunt residents. He therefore urged the residents to cooperate by providing the necessary information for the police to protect them and reduce crime.
“I believe our police officers will work to perfection, and it is up to us to help them to protect lives and properties. President Akufo-Addo is much concerned about your peace and stability and therefore his government will continue to invest in the security of the people,” the DCE stated.
Crime prone
Akotosu and its environs are noted for crime, especially highway robbery.
This caught the attention of the District Chief Executive for the area, whereupon he initiated efforts to build a police station in the area to bring security to the people. The Akotosu police station project was funded by the district assembly.
ACP Ivor Asante, the Kumawu Divisional Police Commander, who stood in for the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, also advised people in the area to avoid the use of instant justice to address criminal issues.
Again, he pleaded with the assembly to provide a befitting accommodation for the police officers who will be assigned to the area.
The ceremony was graced by Nana Amofa Dwomoh, Dadeasehemaa; the District Police Commander, DSP Agyemang Prempeh; Sekyere Central District Chief Executive , Kwadwo Banahene; and other dignitaries.
