Today, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be giving the State of the Nation Address.
By that ceremony, which will be held at the Parliament House, the President will account to the nation, and further explain to us how he intends to use our scarce national resources in developing the nation and improving lives and livelihoods of citizens in every part of the country.
A few days ago, he had occasion to engage newly-appointed Ministers and other functionaries to get them buy into his vision and do all that would be required of them in serving God and country.
Learning curves
As the President unfolds his programmes for all the sectors of the economy at this august ceremony, it is important to highlight how the country has fared so far.
Particularly for the new NPP Members of Parliament, learning those lessons is mandatory, if the governing NPP must recover lost political ground and make history in transitioning from one NPP government to the other.
While the NPP administration has a wonderful record in governance and national development, it must admit that the programme to massively develop our national infrastructure suffered a jolt from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of course, the country in the past four years scored excellent in almost all sectors, including health delivery, agriculture, energy, job creation and education. In particular, the magical Free SHS programme brought huge relief to hundreds of thousands of ordinary Ghanaian kids who would have fallen by the wayside in the struggle to move up socially and economically.
Great expectations
That is why today’s occasion provides a fitting platform for all appointees and layers of party leadership to determine to stay committed to the President’s vision as he rolls out his development agenda, including the planned construction of dozens of district hospitals across the regions.
Aside of that is the ‘Year of Roads’ project, which should improve transport and communication, while enhancing food security and our regional integration and Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) vision and agenda.
As we would admit, this is also aside of such development pieces beautifying our nation as we transform architecture in all communities in the respective regions.
Caution
The Daily Statesman, in this regard, want to caution the appointees of the President to stay focused and commit themselves to the task and mandate of delivering on these laudable programmes in living out the President’s vision and development agenda.
Having been privileged to be part of President Akufo-Addo’s second-term government, they must eagerly embrace and diligently execute the mandate they have to prove to Ghanaians that the NPP is a party of natural choice to citizens as has been manifest in the last two elections.
In this regard, they must stay loyal to the President, and also stay committed to the ideal of connecting with their grassroots in maintaining the required cohesion between the government and the governing NPP and the Akufo-Addo government.
That, in our opinion, is the only way in ensuring that the NPP hands over power to itself in 2024 for the benefit of the good people of Ghana.
