Media reports indicate that the Kasoa Divisional Police Command has arrested one Eric Asare in connection with the murder of Stephen Entsi at Opeikuma junction, Kasoa, in the Central Region.
The 45-year-old businessman was robbed and shot dead at the Opeikuma bus stop. The deceased is said to have been attacked by two men who were riding on a motorbike at the Opeikuma Junction traffic light.
Background
That report comes against the background of a shootout with armed robbers in which two suspects were gunned down. It also comes in the wake of the arrest of two kids who allegedly killed a younger friend in their inordinate quest for ritual money.
Central Regional Police Commander DCOP Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, addressing the media, said the suspect was arrested at Gomoa Buduburam after a tip-off.
More emphatic is the alleged arrest of suspects who had allegedly broken jail in Nigeria and were attempting to find haven in Ghana only to be nabbed in joint operations with the Ghana Immigration Service at Ada on the outskirts of the Greater Accra Region.
New measures
While Kasoa, as a den for criminals, has been quite a mouthful for police in terms of managing crime, there is abundant evidence today that the police have upped their game and are giving the criminals a run for their money.
In ensuring that they conclusively take the fight to the bandits, the police, according to DCOP Habiba Twumasi, are beefing up Kasoa and Gomoa East security to end criminal activities in the area.
Those measures, she revealed, include substantial increase in visibility, snap checks and also mounting of tents in the various communities.
Collaboration from public
However, as she intimated, the recent successes has been as a result of public cooperation in sending information to the police to aid the institution in bringing perpetrators to book.
Public cooperation with the police is an ingredient in managing crime and effectively fighting criminals anywhere on the globe.
Indeed, it is that good collaboration between the law-abiding citizens and the law enforcement agencies that will therefore support the police in cleansing Kasoa as a haven of criminals in stabilising the Central Business District in that part of Ghana and the Central Region.
As we share the success in helping the fight against criminals, we would also thank the Ghana Police Service for the renewed vigour in smoking out the lunatics and in stabilising the terrain.
Nima/Ashaiman
We would recall that in Ashaiman and Nima of yesteryears, it was that same culture of cooperation that led to a diminishing of the criminal activities of bandits who had held the communities hostage for long.
It had been the same trend in La and Teshie where armed robbery has become a ‘No No’ because of community involvement in fighting crime.
It is against this background that we also need to commend the Operations Unit of the Ghana Police Service for developing those strategies and instilling some atmosphere of peace in the area.
They have done well and need to be commended and encouraged in bringing finality to the threat to peace in that busy commercial centre.
