Construction work on the Koforidua-Asesewa highway has commenced under the supervision of the Ghana Highway Authority.
The road construction is being undertaken by Marripoma Company Limited, and it is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The 62-kilometre road linking four municipalities and districts in the Eastern Region will receive bitumen surfacing, construction of bridges and drains to contain heavy water flow from downpours. The four benefiting municipalities and districts are New Juaben South and Yilo Krobo municipalities and Upper Manya Krobo and Fanteakwa North sistricts.
Satisfaction
Some drivers who had earlier complained about the bad nature of the road expressed joy towards the good news of the ongoing construction works.
“Our vehicles have really suffered, some are even at the verge of damaging. Accidents have been happening as a result, but now we are very happy the government has heard our plea and about to construct the road for us,” the drivers said.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Upper Manya Krobo, Felix Nartey Odjao, said the Assembly had handed over some acres of land to the contractor at the Brepaw Kpeti community for construction of temporary shelters and other basic social amenities for his workers.
Advice
He said the contractor had also been introduced to the chiefs and people of all the beneficiary communities for support during the construction period. He said, hopefully, the completion of the road would boost the economic worth of the area and the nation at large.
“We are grateful to President Akufo-Addo for listening and agreeing to fix the road for the people who are predominantly farmers and have gone through a lot of difficulties in transporting their farm produce to the market centres. Also, the road, when completed, will help minimize motor crashes and bring relief to the users who normally complain of the poor nature of the road,” he said.
The DCE cautioned drivers to be careful and avoid speeding since construction work is ongoing. He also advised them to keep the same attitude when the road is completed to help reduce road accidents and prevent avoidable deaths.
