Seventeen people, including ten children, were yesterday confirmed dead in a fatal accident involving a Sprinter bus and an articulated truck in the Abofuor Forest in the Ashanti region.
The accident occurred at about 3:30 am yesterday when the Man Diesel truck with registration number GS 4339-17 collided head-on with the Kumasi-Daboya bound Mercedes Sprinter bus with registration number GT 6075-15.
The truck, travelling from the Techiman-Kumasi section of the road, fully loaded with logs, was said to have veered off its lane, colliding head-on with the oncoming bus travelling in the opposite direction.
Ashanti Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Superintendent Emmanuel Adu Boahene, confirmed the accident.
All passengers on board the Sprinter bus, two drivers and their mates, were rushed to the St. Patrick’s Hospital at Offinso-Maase, but 17 were pronounced dead on arrival.
Casualties
Among the dead were seven adults – six females and one man – and ten children – eight females and two males.
According to Superintendent Adu Boahene, four adults and twelve children, some in critical condition, were admitted to St. Patrick’s Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the hospital pending autopsy and identification, at the time of going to press.
He appealed for public support to help to trace relatives of victims.
