The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has called off its nationwide strike action following the review of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Association and government.
All members of CLOGSAG are therefore expected to resume work on Monday January 24, 2022.
A press release signed by the Executive Secretary of the Association, Isaac Bampoe Addo, expressed CLOGSAG’s appreciation to its “members for their support and the print and electronic media for the coverage of our activities.”
Agreement
The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission also confirmed in a statement that the government had reached an agreement with the leadership of CLOGSAG, which culminated in the signing of the MoU.
The agreement granted some aspects of demands concerning the conditions of service of members with others being work in progress.
Until yesterday, the leadership of CLOGSAG had directed their members in the various ministries, departments and agencies to stay off work until government heeded to their request for better conditions of service.
According to the Association, over a year after their proposed salary structure was sent to the Finance Ministry to deal with it, the authorities were yet to communicate anything to them despite persistent reminders.
Labour unrest
In the last few weeks, the country has witnessed some labour unrests as some worker-groups have threatened to embark on strike actions while others have already laid down their tool.
Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have been on strike for about two weeks now to press home better conditions of service, thereby destabilizing the academic calendar of the traditional public universities.
The College of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), at its emergency meeting held on Tuesday, 4 January 2022, also declared an indefinite strike in all 46 Colleges of Education across the country.
The group said the strike had been necessitated by the government’s failure to implement the 2017 to 2020 conditions of service, as agreed.
According to CETAG, the MoU stated that the effective date of implementation was January 1, 2021, while the payment of associated arrears of nine months was to be honoured in October, November and December 2021, but that had not been done.
