The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) have distributed 47,760 set of supplementary readers to the Ghana Education Service Regional Directorate of the Eastern, Volta and Oti regions for onward distribution to teachers and students.
The supplementary readers include 15,920 teachers’ guide for JHS and SHS tutors and 31,840 to be kept at school libraries as learning materials for students.
Speaking with the Daily Statesman, the SSNIT Area Manager for Koforidua, Richard Manu, said they conducted a research on students getting equipped for the job market, and disclosed that the lack of understanding of social security and the SSNIT scheme formed the knowledge gap of students’ inability to adequately prepare for their future.
He added that the research also showed that most pensioners on the minimum monthly pension did not have a broad understanding of social security.
According to him, this inadequate understanding had led to their failure to join the scheme in their early working years.
“The management of SSNIT believes that filling this knowledge gap among the youth will greatly impact the generations to come by creating in them a culture of savings towards retirement,” he said.
He also noted that pension is dependent on the worker and the salaries on which contributions are paid, stressing that pensions paid to members are reflections of salaries earned.
“This is what most workers don’t understand. It has to be understood by the workers so they don’t allow their employers to understate their salaries when their contributions are being paid,” he added.
