The Ghana Police Service on Friday arrested a convener of the #FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, for allegedly threatening to stage a coup in the country.
He is alleged to have made the comment on social media, where he claimed the “Army is useless”, warning that he would personally overthrow the constitutional government if Parliament passed the controversial E-Levy Bill.
Though it is not clear his intent of flying from the United Kingdom to Ghana few days after his coup plot comment, the security intelligence arrested him on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), and would be arraigned before court today in Accra.
The Director-General of the Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Directorate, ACP Kwesi Ofori, in a press statement issued over the weekend confirmed the arrest after his family and counsel had announced the disappearance of the suspect.
Portions of the statement noted that Mr Barker-Vormawor’s post contained a clear statement of intent with a possible will to execute a coup in his declaration of intent “to subvert the constitution of the Republic of Ghana”.
Mr Barker-Vormawor had taken to social media following pictures emerging from the Majority Leader’s 65th birthday party showing an E-Levy designed cake.
He posted, “If this E-Levy passes after this Cake bullshit, I will do the coup myself. Useless Army!”
Meanwhile, the Police administration has pointed out that the story making rounds in some sections of the media that Mr Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor cannot be found is false and should therefore be disregarded.
“In our press release following his arrest, we stated clearly that Mr Barker-Vormawor was arrested by the Tema Regional Police Command to assist with investigations, and in line with our standard operating procedure, the police proactively ensured that his family and his lawyer were given access to him,” he said.
The Police entreated the citizenry to avoid making pronouncements that may breach peace of the country, explaining that such acts contravene the laws of the country.
