President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lived up to a billing, walloping John Dramani Mahama again in an electoral contest in which the international community, academia and local pollsters predicted would be a “no-match.”
The Chairperson of Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, yesterday declared President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President-elect for a second term.
The President polled a deserving 6,730, 413, representing a 51.59 per cent of the total votes cast, with his closest contender, John Mahama, of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), polling 6, 214, 889, which gives him 47.36 per cent of the total votes cast.
The declaration came after the NDC had cooked hitches deep into the nights, griping over results they didn’t have, even though it was not the duty of the Commission to contrive that for them at the top.
Tantrums
Since the results started trickling in, Mr Mahama, together with his NDC General Secretary, Asiedu Nketia, affirmed how empty they are in serious national and diplomatic issues, despite their position, training and experience.
Unfortunately, in pursuing those criminal pranks, they attempted to infect others, including usually saner leading members like Rojo Mettle-Nunoo, who led the psychological assault on the EC, delaying the processes as a result.
As for the ‘Babies with Sharp Teeth’, who had been employed by the party chieftains to employ stampede as a weapon to intimidate the New Patriotic Party, they appeared to have forgotten that Ghana prefers leaders that are measured and accomplished. That has been the history since our national independence and that is why leaders like Kutu Acheampong were resisted and the Kufuor’s and JEA Mills appreciated.
That Mahama went out of his way – with the presence of international observers all over – to fret and strut – and threatened the system with a resistance, claiming the data he had did not tally with that of the managers of the elections processes, tells volumes about his character.
Good show
It is a good thing that our security agencies showed good faith with the people in protecting the ballot and the processes into the post-elections environment.
That some loony who attempted snatching a ballot box was clipped with “maximum force” is also an indication that any other citizen, whether he is God or the Devil, faces that same fate, should that person take the laws of Ghana for granted, and act as if he is more Ghanaian than anybody else.
Options
Most civil Ghanaians had thought that if Mahama had issues with the results, he could wait and make his point using the pink sheets at the court as had been the practice.
Yet, while the results were still trickling in, Mahama, ostensibly goaded on by young nitwits, decided to try the system by throwing out lies to create the impression that he may be winning and that the process was being manipulated against him.
Unfortunately, Mahama has always deluded himself into thinking that he alone can be violent and others timid, weak and cowed.
Congratulations
It is imperative that the Daily Statesman, as a fervent believer in the vision of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, congratulates him on his victory. We trust that he will continue exercising his mandate to lead in generating development initiatives that will be geared at improving lives and livelihoods in a Ghana that has wide opportunities for all, including members of John Mahama’s NDC.
