H.E. Mrs. Liliana Gomez De Weston, the Ambassador of Peru, has emphasised the immense potential of Africa to harness technology as a catalyst for economic growth, noting that the continent’s cultural wealth and youthful workforce are key drivers in this transformation.
She said this when she delivered a keynote address on the topic ‘Scaling Your Business Through Strategic Technology Investment’ at the ongoing 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogue, which is being held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Monday, January 30, 2025.
Ambassador Gomez De Weston highlighted the shared similarities between Africa and Northern America, despite their geographical distances. She pointed to the cultural richness, entrepreneurial energy, and untapped potential in both regions as they seek to leverage technology to propel their economies forward.
“Africa is at the heart of an exciting digital transformation. With its young and dynamic workforce, Africa is well-positioned to use technology as a primary tool for development, much like Northern America. The continent’s cultural wealth and entrepreneurial spirit are assets that will shape its future in the global economy, she added.
The Ambassador stressed that technology, when strategically harnessed, could be a powerful tool for overcoming the challenges faced by emerging economies. She pointed out that in Peru, technology had become not just a tool but a bridge that enables small businesses to thrive, enhances financial inclusion, and drives innovation.
Tapping from Peru’s experience
Drawing from Peru’s experience, Ambassador Gomez De Weston shared how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country, which represent 99.5% of all businesses and generate about 60% of formal employment, had benefited from technological advancements. She noted that while these businesses often face barriers such as limited access to finance and technology, the rise of digital solutions, such as digital wallets, had significantly transformed the business landscape, particularly for women and rural entrepreneurs.
“Peru’s experience with digital wallets has shown how technology can democratize access to financial services. What was once an obstacle for small businesses and women in rural areas is now an opportunity to grow and scale their operations.”
Ambassador Gomez De Weston stressed that expanding access to technology, especially in rural areas, was crucial for ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth. “In Peru, we have learned that expanding internet access and adopting digital tools are essential for bridging gaps and promoting financial inclusion,” she said. “This can be a powerful strategy for African nations as well.”
