The Amenfi West Municipal Assembly in Western Region has descended heavily on commercial sex workers in the municipality, by demolishing temporary structures which usually serve as their joints for engaging in their nefarious activities.
A joint taskforce set up by the Municipal Security Council on Monday went around demolishing all such structures at Asankragua, Aboi Nkwanta and other communities.
Over sixty temporary structures were demolished during the exercise, which was part of plans to rid Amenfi West of commercial sex workers.
Speaking to journalists, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Lord Nana Tandoh, said the exercise was embarked on as a result of intelligence report received by his office.
He disclosed that majority of the commercial sex workers are Nigerians who publicly smoke, drink alcohol and wear indecent dresses which could easily be copied by young girls in the municipality.
The MCE attributed the upsurge of commercial sex work in Amenfi West to illegal mining from which culprits get monies and spend recklessly.
He reiterated that the exercise was just the beginning because the taskforce will soon strike again.
Mixed reactions
The Daily Statesman gathered that while some of the male residents feel the exercise will deny them the opportunity of visiting commercial sex workers, women, especially married ones, insist it was a step in the right direction.
They therefore volunteered to lead the taskforce to all obscure commercial sex joints in the various communities.
The excited women see this demolishing exercise as a big relief, and have commended the Assembly for embarking on it.
According to them, their spouses always patronize the services of commercial sex workers and therefore do not give them maximum attention at home.
The women complained that apart from abandoning matrimonial beds to spend nights with commercial sex workers, their spouses waste monies that could have been used profitably at home.
“We will now have our husbands and boyfriends to ourselves in the night,” they said.
They also bemoaned how these commercial sex workers are impacting negatively on the youth by sleeping with any “small” boy ready to pay for their services, and exposing young girls to promiscuous lifestyles.
