An aspiring national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, has noted that it will be a disaster for the party in the 2024 general elections if it fails to remain united after its presidential primaries ahead of the elections.
According to him, the party could not win the 2008 elections because of its “inability to pull together after the presidential primaries.”
Addressing a press conference yesterday, the aspiring national chairman said because of his relationship with former President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Akufo-Addo, he is in a unique position to engage the two leading party stalwarts to help resolve all challenges confronting the party.
He assured the rank and file of the party of his preparedness serve with dedication to ensure that the party grows from strength to strength, and continues to win elections to exercise political mandate to help improve the lives of Ghanaians.
According to him, being a party chairman is not about “machoism or buga buga”, but an ability and capacity to build trust and unify all segments within the larger party.
Working together
He urged the party’s delegates and sympathisers to count on him when it comes to working and making sure that things work.
He said his decision to become the national chairman of the party “can’t be a stepping stone to anything,” adding: “I have seen it all in government, and I now want to give back to the party what the party has given me.”
Prof Ameyaw Akumfi said he would involve all stakeholders of the party in the efforts he would put in motion to resolve problems that confront the party
He also gave the assurance that the welfare of party members would occupy an important place in the scheme of affairs of his chairmanship, while ensuring that discipline prevails at all levels of the party’s organisation.
“People sacrifice with their lives, but when we come to power, we forget them. If you want to mobilize them for 2024, you need to treat them well,” he reiterated, adding that one way of motivating people is putting in place a welfare scheme.
