Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a would-be contender in the NPP national chairmanship race, has entreated the Ashanti Council of Elders of the NPP to use dialogue to resolve internal disputes in order to maintain unity in the party.
The NPP national chairman hopeful made the call on Tuesday in Kumasi at a meeting with members of the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders.
According to him, there is the need for the Council of Elders and the party to stay united to enable the party consolidate the gains it made in the past years.
‘Breaking the 8’
He said the party’s determination to retain power in 2024 and break the eight-year governance cycle could be realised if members remained united.
“Let’s bury our differences, and bring on board everyone because we need all efforts and energies of members to achieve that agenda,” he stated.
He appealed to them to quickly step in to settle disputes that are likely to emerge in the forthcoming internal elections in order to promote unity and peace within the party before, during and after the election.
“As Abusuapanin, the Council is in a unique position to play a mediation role, and should be as neutral as possible,” he said.
Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi also encouraged the Council of Elders to work hard by embracing unity, discipline, commitment.
“If the party proclaims the good works of H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, continuing beyond 2024 is achievable,” he stressed.
Election dates
The NPP is expected to hold polling station, electoral area, and constituency executives’ elections this year. They will be followed by regional and national executives’ elections.
While addressing the press on Monday January 28, the General Secretary of NPP, John Boadu, announced that the polling station elections would be held from February 19 to March 5, 2022; electoral area elections from March 18 to March 20, 2022; while chapter and branch elections for external branches will be held from April 15 to April 24, 2022.
Also, the party has set April 22 to April 24, 2022 to elect its constituency executives; May 20 to May 22, 2022 to elect regional executives; while July 14 to July 16, 2022 has been set for the election of national executives.
Meanwhile, the party has suspended the holding of elections in the Bawku Central, Assin North, Jomoro, Jaman South, Fomena, Savelugu, Techimman South and Akwatia constituencies.
The reason, according to the General Secretary, “was not meant for public consumption.”
