Members of the Greater Accra Association of Assembly Members have pledged their unflinching support to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for honouring his promises made to the Ghanaian electorate in the lead up to the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Members of the Association paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo yesterday at the Jubilee House.
Speaking on behalf of the Assembly Members, the spokesperson for the Association, Stephen Kwasi Acquah, said the President has demonstrated through his performance that he is a man of his words.
Making reference to the promise made by former President John Dramani Mahama that he will ensure that Assembly Members receive salary, Mr Kwasi Acquah said the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) failed to do that when he had his time as President.
“Yes, the salary would not be bad, but in 2012, the man who is promising to pay us salaries had this promise in his 2012 manifesto but failed to implement it. So, if we are to believe which of the two will honour his promise, we believe it is Nana Addo,” he said.
He added that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demonstrated that it has the welfare of Assembly Members at heart than any political party in the country.
He assured President Akufo-Addo that the Assembly Members are on the grounds campaigning for him for four more years, adding that one of their tasks is to ensure that four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region, which have always proven difficult for the NPP, fall for the party come December 7.
The four, he mentioned, are Kpone Katamanso, Amasaman, Korle Klottey and Odododiodio constituencies.
Policies
Mr Kwasi Acquah commended the President for his innovative policies, especially the Free Senior High School, which has taken the financial burden off a lot of parents when it comes to paying of school fees.
He mentioned how, in the past, Assembly Members had to go through the burden of paying fees for many parents and wards.
“So when we heard about your Free SHS policy, we took it upon ourselves to let Ghanaians know the benefits of this policy. And true to your words, you have implemented it. Now we can sleep peacefully,” he added.
He added that a lot is happening in terms of infrastructure, with a lot ongoing in the road sector.
He also mentioned that the decentralization of scholarships has ensured that students are able to access scholarships at the tertiary level without difficulties.
President’s response
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his part, urged members of the Association to go all out and ensure that the NPP wins the December 7 presidential and parliamentary polls massively by making sure that everyone who registered goes out to vote.
According to him, although the political atmosphere looks favourable for the NPP, the party cannot afford to be complacent.
“Election is not won until the last vote is counted, and we have to make sure that everybody who has registered will come out to vote,” he said.
