The Black Ultimate team of Ghana
The Black Ultimate team of Ghana delivered a commanding performance over the weekend, defeating the Defence Academy Ultimate team from the United Kingdom by 12 goals to 3 in a thrilling international ultimate frisbee match held in Accra.
The match, organized by the Ghana Flying Disc Federation (GFDF), marked a significant milestone in the promotion of disc sports in Ghana. It brought together athletes, enthusiasts, and supporters of ultimate frisbee to celebrate the sport’s growing popularity and showcase Ghana’s emerging talent on the international stage.
Ultimate frisbee, a fast-paced and highly spirited non-contact sport, combines elements of football, basketball, and netball, promoting teamwork, athleticism, and respect. Beyond its competitive appeal, disc sports offer numerous physical and social benefits, including cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and community building among youth and adults alike.
Sports diplomacy
In a media interview after the showdown, Mr. Desmond Kwame Mantey, president of the GFDF, emphasised the importance of such international engagements in fostering sports diplomacy and enhancing the skills of local players.
“This match is part of our broader strategy to build awareness and grow disc sports across Ghana. The talent is here, and what we need now is support,” he said.
He also called on government agencies, corporate organizations, schools, and sports stakeholders to invest in disc sports by providing resources, facilities, and sponsorship. He believes with the right support, Ghana has the potential to become a powerhouse for ultimate in Africa and beyond.
According to him, the Black Ultimate team’s victory is not just a win on the scoreboard but a step forward in building a vibrant disc sports community in Ghana.
