The Bono East Region is hoping to vaccinate the remaining 426,984 unvaccinated population during the ongoing 4th vaccination exercise.
During the third Covid-19 vaccination exercise, which ended on June 12, 2022, 35,189 (56.5%) doses were administered for a target of 62,251.
Launching the exercise in Techiman, the Regional Minister, Kwasi Adu-Gyan, gave the assurance that there are enough vaccines available to vaccinate all the 426,984 (51.1%) unvaccinated population in the region.
Statistics
He said as of March 27, 2022, when the President announced the lifting of the COVID-19 response restrictions, the total number of active cases in the country stood at 72 with no severely or critically ill persons.
As of 17 June 2022, the minister said, the current active cases in the country stands at one thousand and sixty-four (1,064).
“Similarly, in the Bono East Region, we had not recorded any COVID-19 case since 16th April 2022 until on the 8th June when we recorded two cases. However, since then, we have recorded 61 cases with 52 active cases in seven districts. Our current COVID-19 cases are 3,035, with 75 deaths and 2909 (95.8%) recoveries,” he added.
“Some of our COVID-19 cases are in Senior High Schools. We have had a couple of outbreaks in Senior High Schools with cases and most of their contacts (52.9%), who are 15 years and above, not receiving even a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” he further said.
Arrangements
Mr. Adu-Gyan encouraged the District Directors of Education and Heads of Senior High Schools to arrange for the vaccination exercise in their respective districts and schools.
According to the Minister, a total of 43,701 doses have been administered to students, aged between 15 and 17 years, in both public and private schools in the region so far.
“However, with the enrollment of public senior high schools alone being 42,509, we would have expected close to 85,000 doses of the vaccines administered in public schools because two doses are required to be fully vaccinated,” he said.
“This means that we have about 42,000 doses (50% of doses) yet to be administered in public schools alone. This situation would not be different in the private schools whose heads are also encouraged to facilitate the vaccination of students in their care,” Mr. Adu-Gyan added.
He called on identifiable groups such as churches, mosques, traders, hair-dressers, dress-makers and artisans, among others, to invite the vaccinators to their workplaces to administer the vaccine.
