The 2024 Disability Inclusive Hackathon (DI-Hack) brought together nine talented teams from across Ghana to develop innovative tech solutions for persons with disabilities.
The event was held from October 23 to 25 at the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy in Accra under the theme “Leveraging Technology for an Inclusive, Accessible, and Sustainable World.” Teams of three participants, including at least one person with a disability, were challenged to create solutions that could significantly improve the quality of life for millions of Ghanaians living with disabilities.
Team Codecraft Mavericks won DI-Hack 2024 with their AI-powered assistive technology designed for visually impaired individuals. This innovative solution offers features like text extraction, object detection, navigation, virtual assistance, and companionship.
Teams HandWave and Soronko were the first and second runners-up, respectively, showcasing the potential of technology to address various challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Joseph Aboagye, Project Coordinator for Inclusive Tech Group, stressed the urgent need for government support to transform these innovative ideas into practical solutions for Ghanaian special schools.
He emphasized that investing in assistive technologies can significantly empower students with disabilities, enabling them to participate fully in their education and fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
“By supporting the development and deployment of these technologies, the government can make a substantial impact on the lives of countless young people with disabilities, ensuring they have equal opportunities to reach their full potential,” he said.
DI-Hack 2024 hosted by the Inclusive Tech Group (ITG) and sponsored by Google, PwC, and IEEE Ghana Section, has further established itself as a cornerstone for fostering technological advancements that benefit persons with disabilities. The event is a catalyst for positive change, empowering individuals and shaping a more inclusive Ghana.
