The Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Eastern Region, George Ampofo Ayeh, has urged various hospitals with blood banks to desist from selling blood to patients because the practice is putting human lives at risk.
He said saving one’s life is more important than asking relatives to bring replacements of blood before their patients get served is a forbidden practice that puts the life of the patient in danger.
Importance of blood donation
Speaking at a blood donation exercise organised by the FDA, in partnership with the Eastern Regional Blood Bank, and hosted by Manya Krobo SHS in Somanya, Mr Ayeh called on various institutions and organizations to freely donate blood to the National Blood Bank.
According to him, blood saves pregnant women during labour, saves women diagnosed with breast cancer, and helps doctors during surgery, hence the need to replace every blood lost through voluntary donation.
Mr Ayeh commended Manya Krobo SHS for their continuous support of voluntary donating blood to save lives. He said this kind gesture of the school had helped it win many awards in the past.
He, therefore, encouraged them to continue supporting the national blood bank.
“As part of FDA’s nationwide campaign, we are here today. And I must say the students and staffs of this great school were able to give us 142 pints of blood which has exceeded our main target. With this, I call on the blood bank service in the country not to sell blood to patients because life if more important and the donors of this blood didn’t ask us for money,” he said.
