The Municipal Hospital has been shut down for the next two weeks
Residents of Savelugu, in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region, are living in fear following the upsurge of the Covid-19 cases in the municipality.
Some residents are either relocating to other areas or strictly adhering to the Covid-19 protocols in the face of the upsurge in cases.
Over 60 health workers at the Savelugu Municipal Hospital have tested positive for Covid-19 after mass testing of staff of the hospital.
According to authorities of the hospital, there are still some samples at the laboratory yet to be tested.
Shut down
Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr Sampson Abankwa, said as a result of the increasing number of infections among staff of the hospital, there would be a partial shut down of the hospital for two weeks after which safety measures would have been taken and the hospital fumigated.
He noted, however, that the emergency and labour wards would be open to attend to cases requiring serious attention and also for deliveries.
Dr Abankwa hinted that management would liaise with the Municipal Assembly to get the hospital fumigated.
The Savelugu Municipal Director of Health Services, Ms Denisia Agong, said the fumigation exercise had become necessary due to the suspected cases in some of the wards in the facility.
Advice
Ms Agong urged residents not to panic but strictly observe the Covid-19 protocols.
She advised them to always wear the face masks, regular wash their hands with soap under running water to help curb the new wave of infections in the municipality.
The Northern Region has recorded 970 cases of the Covid-19. However, the total number of cases from the Savelugu Municipality is unknown yet.
Meanwhile, residents of Savelugu are yet to come to terms with the alarming cases of the coronavirus in the area.
Some of them say they are afraid to walk outside of their houses or go to their work places due to the upsurge of the cases.
“I am really scared of the information am getting from the hospital,” a resident said.
Ghana has so far recorded a total of 80,253 cases of Covid-19, with 598 new cases recorded as at the time of going to press yesterday.
Some 73,018 people have also recovered or have been discharged, with a total of 577 deaths. Meanwhile, the current active cases have dropped slightly to 6,658.
