The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat yesterday opened an online portal to enable the first batch of graduates of the Free Senior High School to apply for scholarships to pursue tertiary education.
Making the disclosure at a press briefing, the Registrar of Scholarships, Mr Kingsley Agyemang, said the application process would run from December 1 (yesterday) to December 15.
He admonished the graduates to take the opportunity and apply in order to ensure that their dream of accessing tertiary education materialises.
President Akufo-Addo, following the sterling performance of the Free Senior High School graduates, directed the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat to immediately open an online portal to enable the graduates apply for scholarships.
“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate these graduates, who have come to be known as ‘Akufo-Addo Graduates’, for their sterling performance despite the stringent conditions under which they had to write the WASSCE.
“Kudos also goes out to the parents and guardians of these children who believed in the vision of President Akufo-Addo and fully participated in the free SHS policy by enrolling their wards,” Mr Agyeman stated.
NDC propaganda
Taking a swipe at the opposition NDC and its leader, former President John Dramani Mahama, Mr Agyemang said the NDC’s sudden claim as being the originators of the Free SHS policy is shocking
He reminded Ghanaians about how former President Mahama on several occasions bastardised the policy.
“President John Dramani Mahama, who today is all over the country dishonourably claiming to be the originator of the Free SHS, said he would not spend GH¢2 billion on Free SHS if he had that money,” he said.
NDC failed campaign
Meanwhile, Mr Mahama’s promise to absorb fees of first year tertiary students for the 2020/2021 academic year has suffered a setback, especially on social media.
The former President made a promise in the NDC manifesto to absorb 50 per cent fees of first year students for the next academic year, but with just five days to the general elections, the NDC made a sudden policy change.
The former President’s policy has been described by many as a last minute thought to woo voters.
Overwhelming majority of the comments hit at Mahama and the NDC for being desperate and hypocritical, with some even ridiculing the former President that he will soon promise to give free fuel for all cars which will be registered in 2021.
