Gold Fields Ghana Limited (Tarkwa Mine), in collaboration with women’s groups across the world, on Wednesday, celebrated the 2022 International Women’s Day at Abekoase in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of Western Region.
The celebration, which was dubbed “Break the bias”, brought together different women’s groups, such as Women in Mining. Schoolchildren also took part in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Celestina Allotey, Vice-President, Sustainable Development, West Africa Gold Fields, encouraged individuals and institutions to give women the opportunity to excel in their various fields.
Marginalised
She regretted that women are more often sidelined to prevent them from giving off their best when majority of them have proven to be on top of their vocations and professions.
Dr. Allotey said it was about time this bias was broken, and challenged women to venture into male dominated professions such as medicine and engineering.
She also urged women to be courageous and take bold steps on issues concerning their future and not allow themselves to be intimidated.
“Parents should be able to share duties in the house for children such as sweeping, cleaning of dishes, scrubbing and the floor mopping, which should not be solely for girls, but the boys as well,” she advised.
Nana Abena Boaduwa II, Queenmother of Apinto Divisional Council, said women should be watchdogs and encourage each other, especially when they are traumatised.
“If you have problem with each other, you can seek counselling at the traditional council for it to be settled peacefully and amicably,” she said.
She advised women to stop backbiting, and encourage each other to give off their best.
Mrs Mary Vida Kwofie, Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Director of Education, also urged parents to support their children in education.
She reminded them that education is the only legacy that can bequeathed the children to attain higher heights in life and also be responsible citizens.
