Madam Hawa Koomson
Mavis Hawa Koomson, a former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and three-time former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, has intensified her engagement with key stakeholders in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as she pushes for structural reforms to enhance women’s participation in the party.
She was spotted at the party’s national headquarters in Accra, accompanied by both former and current women organizers from across the country.
Madam Koomson, a former Minister of Special Development Initiatives, publicly known to be preparing to contest the NPP’s National Women Organizer position, is reported to have begun significant consultations and advocacy ahead of the official opening of nominations.
Per reports, her visit to the NPP headquarters formed a strategic move to champion reforms within the party’s internal structure—particularly regarding the status and influence of its women’s wing.
NPP women’s front
According to Madam Hawa Koomson, there exists deep concerns about the current classification of the women’s secretariat within the NPP. Under Articles 10 and 15 of the party’s constitution, the women’s front is categorized as a wing and a special organ.
This position, she believes, does not reflect the true weight and contribution of women within the party’s national operations.
According to sources close to her team, Madam Koomson is proposing an amendment that will elevate the status of the women’s secretariat, aligning it more directly with the mainstream structural components of the party.
This move, she argued, was not just a technical adjustment but a bold step toward realizing the NPP’s founding vision of empowerment, inclusion, and grassroots mobilization.
“Women make up 58 percent of Ghana’s electoral register. That is not a margin that any serious political party can afford to overlook. If we truly believe in empowering women and expanding our electoral fortunes, then structurally and strategically, the women’s front must be given its rightful place in the party,” Hon. Hawa Koomson was reported to have made the statement during her visit to the NPP headquarters.
