Students and staff of Huni-Valley Senior High School in the Western Region have lauded Gold Fields for constructing an ultra-modern Girls’ dormitory for the school. The 350-bed facility will not only accommodate more girls to increase enrollment, but also save some Day students the inconvenience of commuting to and from school almost everyday.
This came to light when Gold Fields officials conducted journalists round the dormitory as part of the mining company’s two-day media engagement last week.
According to Boison Construction Limited, the contractor, 85% of the project, which started in September 2020, had already been executed, and that come September this year, it will be fully completed.
The Daily Statesman gathered that the existing Girls’ dormitory cannot even accommodate up to a hundred students, and urgently needs refurbishment.
It was therefore not surprising when the girls were full of joy and said they could not wait to be asked to move into the new dormitory.
First time
Students and staff said this was the first time that the school was having such a magnificent modern Girls’ dormitory, and expressed gratitude to Gold Fields for the facility.
The Project Manager at Gold Fields, Mr. Roger Adama, told journalists the project was being funded by Damang Mine following a request by the school authority.
He disclosed that 6.5 million cedis had so far been spent on the project with more to be spent in the next few months.
Mr. Adama spoke of plans by Gold Fields to fix double steel beds in the tiled dormitory and also engage a consultant to design all the wiring and lighting system.
He also spoke of plans by the company to undertake some concrete pavement works at the frontage, design a convenient washing and drying place at the back with constant water supply from newly dug boreholes and storage tanks.
The Project Manager said the dormitory will also boast of rumps to facilitate movement of physically challenged students.
