About 120km of roads in the Kumasi Metropolitan area has been asphalted as part of the government’s ‘Year of Roads project’, with other major roads also under rehabilitation.
The Sobolo Extension, New Amakom, Anlo Fante New Town, Nhyiaeso, Danyame, Odeneho Kwadaso roads and others are part of the completed roads constructed by Messrs Joshob Construction Limited.
According to the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, the government has also awarded 50km of asphaltic works to Messrs Griner Company, who has already completed 16.82km of the project in the TUC, Atasomanso, Konkromase, Adiembra, Fankyenebra areas.
He made these disclosures when he addressed officials of the KMA at the Prempeh Assembly Hall.
Year of Roads
He said the ‘Year of Roads’ projects have also eased congestion within the Kumasi city, especially the Airport Roundabout to Duase stretch. The said road stretch was awarded on contract to Attachy Construction Limited, with asphaltic works duly undertaken.
“This indeed is the ‘Year of Roads’. His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, promised that 2020 was the ‘Year of Roads’. True to his word, Kumasi has had its fair share of road projects, which have given our metropolis a major facelift,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo’s government, in November 2019, cut sod for the construction of 100km Kumasi Inner-City Roads project.
Road projects
Mr Osei Assibey Antwi again said the Government of Ghana secured a 36.5million Euro loan from the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) for the Kumasi Roads & Drainage Extension (Lake Road) project.
According to him, the scope of work includes the construction of 2km of the Lake Road, from the Coca Cola Bottling Plant to Chirapatre-Dompoase, lining of 2km of the Aboabo/Sisai Drain and the construction of a terminal at Chirapatre.
He added that Messrs China Henan Company Limited has completed about 85 per cent of the lining of the Sisai River, 44 per cent of the bus terminal and 20 per cent of the Lake Road, which is expected to be completed in 2021.
He further explained that the 1st Phase, comprising Apatrapa to Bekwai Roundabout, which is 6.5km, is 95 per cent complete, with the Agric Underpass also reaching 97 per cent completion.
