The resignation of the Special Prosecutor, Martin ABK Amidu, has come as a good omen for Ghanaians. This is because Mr Amidu woefully failed to live up to expectation, disappointing many Ghanaians who had faith in him as an anti-corruption crusader.
The Special Prosecutor, contrary to what was expected of him, was always fighting people under investigation in the media through writing of long epistles and unwarranted thesis.
A man who fancied playing to the gallery, he was more committed to the writing of long epistles for media attention than focusing on his job description as the Special Prosecutor of the republic cloaked with the law to fight the canker of corruption.
Memory lane
The ‘saint’ Martin Amidu failed to work with the late ‘Super Saint’ Prof Atta Mills, leaving the latter with no option than to sack him from office.
It therefore comes as no surprise when the late former President J. J. Rawlings never saw the need to promote him as the substantive Attorney General in his government, perhaps due to his lack of professional ethics and his amateurish characteristics.
Mr Amidu first served as the Deputy Attorney-General in the last four years of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and again served as a Deputy Attorney-General in the NDC government for eight years without promotion as the substantive Minister under J. J. Rawlings.
In 2000, the late Prof Mills selected him as his running mate for the general elections but was dropped ahead of the 2004 general elections due to his arrogant and disrespectful nature.
Some people are good at playing supporting roles than being the leader. The character type of Martin Amidu did not deserve the Special Prosecutor position in the first place.
Mr Amidu, through the writing of long epistles, became the favourite of the media, for which reason President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo decided to give him the opportunity to serve as the first Special Prosecutor.
However, Mr Amidu virtually became a big disaster. He failed to live up to expectation and could not translate his theoretical long epistles into practice.
Office
The Office of Special Prosecutor (SP) is not all about Mr Amidu. It is a team work, but Mr Amidu reduced the whole office to himself, refusing to work in harmony with the staff of the office.
Mr Amidu said he cannot interrogate and investigate John Mahama over the Airbus bribery scandal because he is a presidential candidate, but he (Mr Amidu) can resign in an election year? Mr Amidu is behaving like an ‘attention seeker’, almost giving credence to Mr Mahama’s description of him as a ‘coward’.
Zero effect
The resignation of Mr Amidu would have no consequence on the elector victory of President Akufo-Addo and the NPP in the upcoming December 7 polls.
For the avoidance of doubt, Mr Amidu has resigned to prepare himself to contest the presidential ticket of NDC in 2022 ahead of the 2024 general election. So, in order to look good in the eyes of the delegates of NDC, he decided to resign three weeks to the 2020 general elections with the sole aim of hurting the chances of President Akufo-Addo and NPP.
Mr Amidu should understand that 70-80 per cent of Ghanaians were hugely disappointed in him for his gross incompetence as the Special Prosecutor.
His resignation, just like the death of the late former President Rawlings, would have absolutely NO effect on the electoral victory of NPP and President Akufo-Addo.
We can’t get everything right, but certainly the achievements of Akufo-Addo’s government shall silence the resignation of Mr Amidu.
If he could not work with the late Prof Mills and President Nana Akufo-Addo, then that man should examine himself well and correct his wrong attitudes and actions.
