Memphis Metropolitan Limited, a local road construction company, has donated building materials worth GH₵250,000.00 towards reconstruction of Adubrim and Akropong farming communities, in Ellembele district of Western Region, which were destroyed by flood a fortnight ago.
The items included 500 bags of cement and 100 packets of roofing sheets towards the impending reconstruction exercise. Aside that, assorted relief items such as bags of rice, boxes of tinned fish, canned tomatoes, cooking oil, water, among others were donated to the flood victims.
The items were presented to the Ellembele District Chief Executive (DCE), Kwasi Bonzoh, and handed over to leaders in the respective communities.
According to the Operations Manager at Memphis, Cephas Kafui, the donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to communities in its catchment area.
“It was also a way of giving back to the people. Memphis Metropolitan Limited has been working in the Nzema area, specifically Jomoro and Ellembele, since 2014,” he added.
Current works
The company is currently working on over a 100 out of the 278km road network in Ellembele being re- constructed by President Akuffo Addo’s government.
The roads include the 6.5km Esiama-Nkroful-Teleku Bokazo asphaltic concreting, 20km Teleku Bokazo –Salman-Simpa Junction and 20km Teleku Bokazo- Asasetre – Ainyinase bitumen surfacing. The rest are the Awiebo, Eikwe, Asanta, Teleku Bokazo, Edwakpole, Akpandue, AB Bokazo town roads as well as Kikam Technical School road.
The company had also suffered the brunt of the recent flood, causing some of its construction materials to be carried away. Mr Kafui indicated that the pain and frustration of losing one’s property, prompted management to donate to the victims.
Meanwhile, the United High Commission for Refugees had earlier presented them with a thousand blankets, mosquito nets and mats.
The District Chief Executive further called on companies, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other individuals to come to the aid of the victims.
“The district had put measures in place to mitigate the plights of the people living in areas prone to flood. The government has planned with the district to work to ensure the people, especially those displaced, get their lives returned to normalcy,” he disclosed.
Adubrim and Akropong got flooded a fortnight ago as a result of heavy downpour. The flooding incident destroyed 156 houses and rendered 560 people homeless.
