The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality within the technology sector.
She said government would continue to support a broader strategy to propel Ghana’s presence in the global tech arena, stressing the critical role of inclusive leadership in fostering innovation and growth.
Speaking during the grand finale of the 2024 Ms. Geek Ghana competition at the Accra City Hotel, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful emphasised the importance of creating equal opportunities for women in technology.
“Ensuring gender equality in the tech industry is not just a moral imperative; it is essential for our nation’s progress and global competitiveness. The government remains deeply committed to this cause, and we will continue to champion policies and initiatives that support and elevate women in technology,” she said.
Commendation
The Minister lauded the finalists for their ingenuity and dedication, noting that their contributions were pivotal in shaping the future of technology.
She said government was dedicated to creating a supportive ecosystem for women in technology. This includes promoting STEM education, facilitating access to funding and resources, and implementing policies that address gender biases and barriers in the tech industry.
“The path to a thriving tech sector is paved with inclusive practices and equal opportunities. By investing in our young women and supporting their ambitions, we are ensuring that Ghana will not only participate in the global tech arena but also lead with innovation and excellence,” she added.
The winner
Bottozah Biana Bubune was announced as 2024 Ms. Geek Ghana Winner. She expressed gratitude to the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, the Ministry itself, and the other contestants.
This year, the competition saw 66 applications from girls aged 13 to 21, reflecting a growing interest in technology among young Ghanaian women. After a rigorous selection process, 10 finalists were chosen to present their innovative projects, ranging from e-waste management to healthcare solutions.
Among the standout projects were Richardson Elorm’s “E-Waste Evolution,” Leticia Makafui Ahiamadzi’s environmental risk management system, and Hannibel Opokuwaa Nyarko’s “MumCare Connect,” a mobile app supporting maternal and child health.
As the winner, Biana Bubune received a cash prize and a fully funded trip to participate in the Ms. Geek Africa contest, scheduled for 2025. This opportunity will allow her to showcase her project on a continental stage, competing with other brilliant minds from across Africa.
She called for continued efforts to create a future where gender is no barrier in the tech industry, urging all to support the next generation of female tech leaders.
