The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has sent a strong warning to some hoodlums of the opposition NDC within the Tamale metropolis that the security agencies will deal ruthlessly with anybody who tries to foment trouble in the region.
Some NDC supporters, Thursday night, demonstrated violently amidst shooting of guns and burning of car tyres in the principal streets of Tamale, destroying some properties, including the window glasses of Tamale Central Mosque.
They went on rampage following the directive by their 2020 presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, to protest against the 2020 elections results.
Warning
However, addressing a press conference, the Regional Minister, who doubles as the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), said the security personnel were ever ready and would deal ruthlessly with the hoodlums.
He reiterated that the security would not sleep on their jobs, but would arrest all the perpetrators and bring them to book.
Mr Saeed said REGSEC, chiefs and the clergy had worked very hard to bring peace to the Northern Region and would therefore not allow any individual or group of persons to jeopardize the peace of the area
“The Northern Region is peaceful; Dagbon is peaceful; Dagbon has been here before any political party and so therefore, we will not sit down and allow any individual or political party to undermine the peace in Dagbon and for that matter the Northern Region,” he fumed
He said, for the past two days, the NDC youth had embarked on actions meant to undermine the peace and security of the area.
He indicated that some of their actions included burning of tyres, firing of weapons, harassment of people, using abusive confrontation against opponents and threatening the lives of innocent people in the area.
Ensuring peace
Mr Saeed said the security agencies were poised to ensure that normalcy prevailed in the metropolis and the region as a whole.
He hinted that some persons were behind bars following a shooting incident at a collation centre in Savelugu that led to the death of one person.
He called for restraint and assured the populace that the security agencies were in control of the metropolis.
The Minister urged the people in the region to feel free and go about their normal duties without fear.
The Mayor of Tamale, Iddrisu Musah Superior, warned that security agencies would not allow the NDC hoodlums to hold Tamale and the region into ransom.
He said instigating the NDC youth in Tamale to go on rampage would not help the party, advising them to follow the 2012 path of President Akufo-Addo by going to court if they feel cheated.
“Nana Akufo-Addo did not instigate NPP youth to go on rampage to cause mayhem and fire guns,” he stressed.
