The leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Sunday visited the residence of the late Member of Parliament for the Mfantseman constituency, Ekow Quansah Hayford, at Mankessin, to sympathize with the bereaved family.
The delegation, led by the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu, assured the family of the party’s continuous support in these trying times, particularly in their quest to seeing the killers of the late MP brought to justice.
The late MP was gruesomely murdered by some unknown assailants last Friday while he was returning from a campaign tour.
New candidate
Meanwhile, the party has hinted that it will soon be looking for a new candidate to replace the departed MP. This is because the country’s electoral laws enjoin the party to, within 10 days, file a new parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
According to Mr Boadu, the selection will be done following necessary consultations with the bereaved family as well as with the Mfantseman constituency and Central Regional executives to agree on a possible replacement. He noted that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) would meet today, Wednesday, October 14 2020, to confirm a new NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
Calls on the widow
Meanwhile, there are strong calls coming from the constituents for the party to settle on the wife of the late MP, Mrs Ophelia Hayford, as replacement.
This call is shared by the executives of the party in the constituency.
It is however not clear whether the party will heed to the calls and accordingly name his widow as the new parliamentary candidate after the NEC meeting today.
The NPP delegation that visited the bereaved family included the Assin Central MP and Dean of MPs from the Central Region, Kennedy Agyapong; Central Regional executives of the party, led by the Regional Chairman, Robert Kutin Jnr; the party’s Director of International Affairs, Atefuah Danso; a Deputy National Women Organiser, Hajia Saudatu; Deputy National Communications Directors Yaw Preko and Maame Yaa Aboagye, as well as all the constituency executives of the NPP in the area.
