The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set an ambitious target for the 2024 presidential election, with a goal of capturing between 300,000 and 500,000 votes in the Volta Region, representing a significant increase in support from its 2020 performance.
Mr. Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the NPP, shared this projection at a press conference held at the party’s regional headquarters in Ho yesterday.
“Our expectation is clear: the NPP is targeting between 300,000 and 500,000 votes in the 2024 presidential election,” Mr Ahiagbah announced.
He added: “This is more than just a numerical target. It represents our conviction that the message we bring — focused on economic empowerment, infrastructure, and sustainable development — is resonating with Ghanaians.”
Strategic shift
In what he described as a strategic shift, Mr Ahiagbah explained the NPP’s intention to break the longstanding dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region. He emphasized that the NPP’s approach would be based on tangible policies and programmes, designed to uplift the people rather than relying on what he referred to as “unproductive and abusive” practices of the NDC.
“It is not going to be business as usual for the NDC,” he said, accusing the opposition party of “deception, misrepresentation, and inflaming sectional differences.” He added, “The usual invocation of former President Rawlings as a son of Volta to derive votes will no longer work for the NDC.”
Mr. Ahiagbah emphasised the shift in voter behaviour in the Volta Region, evidenced by the NPP’s historic win of the Hohoe parliamentary seat in the 2020 election and improved performance in Ketu North. “The change started with the 2020 elections, when the NPP won the Hohoe seat for the first time, improved its showing in Ketu North, and obtained 14.1 percent of the presidential votes,” he noted.
Electoral renaissance
The NPP Communications Director described the evolving political landscape in the region as an “electoral renaissance,” driven by a growing middle class and youth demographic who had embraced NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s forward-looking policies. These policies, he said, aimed to equip Ghanaian youth for the “fourth industrial era,” enabling them to compete globally for jobs, education, and business opportunities.
He highlighted the positive feedback of Dr. Bawumia’s recent tour in the region. He stated, “The NDC is confused. They can’t understand what is happening in the Volta Region, which is shocking. However, as a Voltarian, I am not surprised because I believe the Volta Region will someday become a competitive electoral market.”
Appeal to electorate
Ahiagbah appealed directly to the people of Volta, describing the NPP’s proposition as an “electoral partnership” aimed at developing the region. He called on Voltarians to support the NPP in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, promising that the party’s “Bold Solutions for Jobs and Business” would drive accelerated regional development.
“The outcome for the Volta Region in this proposition is accelerated regional development,” he stated, citing the current government’s investment in the region as an indicator of the economic growth that could be realized under a future NPP administration. “The considerable investment of the Akufo-Bawumia administration in the region is a herald of mammoth growth when Dr. Bawumia becomes President,” he stated.
