The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has charged Ministers, Members of Parliament and all other appointees in the Akufo-Addo administration to brace themselves up as the party strives to break the eight years’ political jinx in the country.
Addressing members of the Tertiary Students’ Confederacy of NPP (TESCON-NPP), a student wing of the NPP, in Kumasi, he said the party worked so hard in 2016 to win the general elections, as “government appointees embraced fortified energy, hard work and zeal in their endeavours”.
He was concerned, however, that the party is hit with a perception of tired limbs and fatigued minds.
Encouraging the rank and file of the party to wake up, he stated: “It is important that we remind ourselves because whichever position you are occupying is not based on the fact that you’re a doctor, lawyer, professor, etc. You are occupying that position because the NPP is in power. That’s why, it is crucial to bear in mind that we need committed CEOs, MMDCEs, who understand that there is so much in power.”
He also disclosed that the party at the national level is conducting an assessment on the performance of government appointees, adding that “once that is over, we shall discuss it with the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.
Missionaries
The NPP General Secretary also admonished the students to be missionaries in spreading the good news of development being rolled out by the Akufo-Addo administration.
He said it is part of the process to position the party to ‘break the eight’, adding “such information will go a long way to convince the ordinary Ghanaian to appreciate the gains, and be encouraged to vote massively for the NPP in 2024”.
“We are called upon to have a missionary zeal in the work of governance and at the same time spread the good news of the New Patriotic Party government. We’ve got to tell our story…If we do not trumpet our achievements, and they are many, no one will tell them for us. Let’s be agents of the party by telling the government’s success stories,” he indicated.
Support govt
The NPP General Secretary also urged the public to trust and support the government, as it takes measures to mitigate the current economic hardship in the country, and eventually revive the economy.
He said the party sees Ghana’s current challenges as yet another opportunity for the NPP government to do what it does best in getting the country out of difficulties.
“We aim to reduce inflation to post-pandemic levels, keep the national debt at sustainable levels, create jobs and fund public infrastructure projects, particularly roads and schools. As reiterated by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, in the Mid-Year Budget Review, President Akufo-Addo is determined to revive the economy in the next two and half years,” he stated.
Mr Frimpong Kodua affirmed that the NPP “has a history of turning things around when the country faces crisis”
United front
Touching on the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, he appealed to all members, executives, loyalists and sympathisers of the NPP to be guided by history, citing the split that culminated in the defeat of the PNP administration in 1979, and also lessons the NPP failed to learn after the exit of the Kufuor administration in 2008.
He pledged, on behalf of the national executives, to act as impartial referees in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries, as example to constituency and regional executives as well as MPs and MMDCEs.
He also admonished the rank and file of the party to refrain from the use of provocative language, character assassination and lampooning of rivals in the lead up to the party’s primaries.
