The governing New Patriotic Party, over the weekend, elected an almost new set of national officers to lead the party for the next four years, and to particularly spearhead its determination to win the 2024 general elections.
The election saw the five-time contender, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, emerge as the party’s National Chairman, with Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), emerging as the General Secretary.
Mr Ntim garnered 4,014 votes, representing 72.76 per cent of the votes cast, to beat six other contenders. They were Stephen Asamoah Boateng, who had 1,010 votes; George Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah, 294 votes; Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, 101; Gifty Asantewa Ayeh, 44 votes; Sammy Crabbe, 32; and Akwasi Osei-Adjei, who had 20 votes.
For the General Secretary position, Mr Kodua polled 2,837 votes, representing 51.06 per cent, to unseat the incumbent, John Boadu, who polled 2,524 votes, representing 45.43 per cent. Other aspirants in the General Secretary race were Frederick Opare Ansah, who had 50 votes; Iddrisu Musah Superior, 104; and Ramseyer Ahmed Agyemang-Prempeh, who obtained eight votes.
A former Central Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Danquah Smith Buttey, the incumbent National First Vice-Chairperson of the party, Rita Talata Asobayire, and Alhaji Masawuud Osman emerged First, Second and Third Vice-Chairpersons respectively.
Other positions
Meanwhile, the party’s National Women Organiser, Kate Gyamfua, maintained her position, securing 93.78 per cent of the total votes cast to beat her only two contenders, Ellen Ama Daaku and Hajia Sawudatu, who had 1.36 and 4.84 per cent respectively.
The party’s National Youth Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, also polled 2870 votes to win the position of National Organiser, beating former Tema East Member of Parliament, Daniel Nii Kwartey Titus-Glover, who had 2274 votes, and four other aspirants.
The incumbent Nasara Coordinator, Abdul Aziz Haruna Futa, secured 328 votes to retain his position, beating Issaka Muazu Kunata, who had 119 votes, Awal Mohammed, 24 votes, and three others.
A former Deputy National Youth Organiser of the party, Salam Mustapha, polled 255 votes to be elected as National Youth Organiser, beating Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, who had 153 votes; Micheal Osei Boateng, 120 votes; and Prince Kamal Gumah, who secured 101 votes.
In the treasurer position, Ghana’s former Deputy Ambassador to China, Dr Charles Dwamena, polled 2917 votes to emerge the winner. He beat a two-time contender for the same position, Mary Posch-Oduro, who had 1303 votes, Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah, the incumbent Director of Finance and Administration, 1197; and Dr Yusif Tedam, 125 votes.
Working together
The newly elected Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, addressing the party, said he would work with the new leadership to retain power in the 2024 general elections. “The new national executive will work assiduously for the party to win Election 2024 in conjunction with our Members of Parliament and our members in the diaspora,” he stated.
Mr Ntim, who had been contesting the positing for about 20 years, stated that he cherished the honour done to him, assuring that he would live up to the expectation that comes with the confidence reposed in him.
“Finally, it’s been 20 long years of wandering in the wilderness before clinching this position as National Chairman of the NPP, and I assure you that I’m going to cherish the chairmanship position…And I will make sure that it will be a unique position that will remain enviable for anybody to aspire [to] …,” he said.
For his part, the newly elected General Secretary, Justin Kodua, reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the structures of the NPP, while upholding the tenets and provisions of the party’s Constitution to achieve the ‘breaking the eight’ agenda.
“I will work hard to transform the administrative set-up of the NPP to make it work again. I will bring in creative ideas in contemporary party management and leadership, and make the grassroots my priority to break the 8,” he assured.
