The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has commended the collaborative efforts between the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Parliament for the swift and decisive action in passing the National Service Authority Bill.
Speaking during an interview with the media, the president of NUGS, Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel, said the new legislation would revitalise the National Service Scheme to ensure that it remained relevant and beneficial to both the youth and the nation at large.
“We are thrilled by the prompt action taken by Parliament and the National Service Scheme to pass the National Service Authority Bill. This demonstrates a clear commitment to improving the framework within which our national service operates,” he said.
He added that the new bill would enhance the experience of national service personnel, making it more aligned with contemporary needs and challenges.
“The National Service Authority Bill seeks to transform the current National Service Scheme into a more robust and autonomous entity capable of addressing the evolving needs of the youth and the country,” he noted.
Key provisions
He further touched on key provisions in the bill, including enhanced training programmes, better welfare packages for service personnel, and more strategic deployment to areas where their skills are most needed.
“The NSS has shown exemplary leadership in advocating for this bill, understanding that the future of our nation depends significantly on how we harness the potential of our youth. With this new legal framework, we are optimistic about the positive changes that will follow,” he explained.
Okyeremeh Daniel called on all relevant authorities to ensure the smooth implementation of the bill’s provisions.
He reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to maintaining the momentum gained from the bill’s passage to address any potential challenges that may arise during its implementation phase.
“Passing the bill is only the first step. We urge the NSS and all other stakeholders to work diligently to implement the provisions of the National Service Authority Bill effectively. This will require continuous collaboration, monitoring, and adjustments to ensure that the objectives of the bill are fully realised,” he indicated.
