A former communications officer of the governing NPP in the Akwatia constituency, Nana Obeng- Danquah, has asked the factions in the party in the area to let cool heads prevail.
According to him, even though the loss of the Akwatia seat by the NPP to the NDC is painful, it is shameful and unfortunate that shortly after the loss the party continues to deepen its division.
Speaking to the Daily Statesman, Daakye, as Nana Obeng-Danquah is affectionately called, said this is not the time to be blaming some individuals for the loss.
“It is too early to start this kind of politics to further deepen division among party supporters,” he said.
The NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi, polled 18,742 votes in the just-ended general elections, losing to the NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye, alias Okoyo, who garnered 19,899.
Division
Following the defeat, some constituency executives of the NPP have announced their intention to sack the outgoing Member of Parliament for the area, Mercy Adu Gyamfi, alias Ama Sey, from the party effective January 7, 2020.
This is because, according to them, the MP orchestrated the defeat of the party’s candidate.
The party has also revealed it will suspend en masse party executives who aided Ama Sey to campaign ‘skirt and blouse’ votes against the NPP candidate, leading to his defeat.
Subsequently, some party members loyal to Ama Sey have also accused some national, regional and constituency leaders of the party of orchestrating the defeat of the NPP candidate.
Hope
According to the former constituency communications officer, there are many factors that led to the defeat of the NPP parliamentary candidate. He expressed the hope that the party’s national leadership would investigate to find out the causes.
Nana Obeng-Danquah urged the party supporters to join in the jubilation of the party following the victory of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and let go of the pains of the Akwatia defeat.
He entreated the President to do extensive and thorough due diligence in appointing people who will help him to achieve a lasting legacy in his second term.
